Sophie Whelpton is a ceramicist based in East Sussex.
I discovered wheel thrown ceramics relatively recently.
I was lucky enough to do a part time Foundation Degree in Fine Art as a mature student after bringing up children and office work.
I have always loved art and was persuaded by my father to study other subjects for A level (a long time ago when fathers probably had more say!) and art wasn’t considered to have so many job opportunities.
I happened to chat to a friend who was going to pottery classes in Forest Row. I’d always wanted to try the wheel so I was excited to give it a go.
My style is rather haphazard and to some, my work is not finished off properly! But I like the marks that appear in the process and show the bowl or cup is made by hand and is unique.
I now run ‘wheel experiences’ for those wanting to try without signing up on a weekly course. Lots of fun and fantastic results. I had no idea this area would give me so much pleasure.
I like to make practical household wear for everyday use and like to think of my bowls plonked on a table full of food to share and enjoy.
